When we started the ‘What about us?’ research, we knew that young people with learning difficulties can sometimes feel isolated or unhappy in mainstream schools and colleges. We wanted to help schools and colleges do a better job of including young people with learning difficulties. We wanted to help young people feel happier and more secure.

We decided to look at everything about life in school and at college:

  • what goes on in classes and between classes
  • where to get support
  • activities out of school and college
  • plans for life after school and college.

We decided to involve young people with learning difficulties in doing their own research – to see what suggestions they would have for making schools and colleges better. We hoped that other schools and colleges would then use these ideas to help other young people with learning difficulties feel more included.
